LEAD SAFETY
With a little education, families can take important preventive measures to keep their homes clean and their families safe.
Testing For Lead
Lead testing in New Jersey means that renters and property owners should test their buildings for lead if they are more than 30 years old, and parents should have their children tested. The Coalition is working to improve both screening rates throughout the state.
Home Testing
If you live in a home that was built before 1978, you should test for lead dust. Qualified families are eligible to receive a free in-home test kit from Wipe Out Lead NJ.
Child Testing
All children should have their blood checked for lead before age two and every six months afterwards. To order this simple blood test, contact your family doctor. To raise awareness about this issue, you can download and print out our BLL poster.
The Coalition also provides information specifically for parents who have concerns about their children’s exposure to sources of lead poisoning, including a powerpoint presentation that includes general information.
Abatement Loans
If lead is discovered in your home, you may be eligible for state assistance to aid in its removal. For more information about this process, contact Donna Bordner, Program Coordinator – Wipe Out Lead New Jersey.
Lead Education
Lead poisoning can affect families in many different ways. Some sources of lead may be unfamiliar to parents, like fishing weights, ammunition, or home remedies. Others may be brought into the home from the workplace or a hobby. Lead can sometimes even be tracked inside when children go out to play.
The Coalition is pleased to offer free lead educational materials on a variety of topics, including:
